Trends for MSPs

Technology trends that MSPs have, in the past, had to bring to the attention of their clients such as security, cloud computing and disaster recovery are becoming better known to SMBs.  It has become a common occurrence that a security breach, data loss or some type of technology story will make headline news.  As a result, SMBs are now asking their MSPs for the most cutting-edge solutions for their business.

SMBs are moving more data to the cloud than ever before in order to cut costs and increase profitability.  This makes the MSPs job a bit more complicated.  As suggested in a recent post on Talkin’ Cloud, this is an opportunity for MSPs to become more specialized as opposed to being a technology support generalist.

One of the hottest, if not the hottest, trends for SMBs is security.  81% of all security breaches happen to SMBs, typically those with under 100 employees.  In a guest blog on MSPmentor, they list 7 Managed Services Trends.  Three of the 7 trends are security related.  Another guest blog on this site discusses that security is the main concern for consumers and businesses alike.  With more businesses using the cloud, they need to be able to count on being secured.

Another trend that continues to grow is Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) as reported in industry news from CRN, MSPmentor, and Channele2e.  The smaller MSPs can’t compete with the bigger MSPs because they typically don’t have the financial or human resources necessary to do so.  Experts predict this M&A trend will increase over the next several years.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is making a lot of headlines and is changing business as usual.  There is a lot for businesses to consider before incorporating IoT.  Small businesses in particular will have to make clear polices regarding data use.  According to research conducted by Gartner, there will be 25 billion things connected by 2020; just 4 short years from now!

With as fast as our industry is moving, it is more important than ever that MSPs stay current and relevant to ever-changing technology and business trends.
